One house in the neighborhood stands out.  It looks like the other houses, but it appears that no one has lived in it for quite some time.  The weeds are as tall as the mailbox where the foreclosure notices were delivered.  The house sits like a grave marker, a monument to dead dreams.

This wasn’t what I expected to see as we drove around, searching for our next home.  It sent a little shiver through me.  I wondered, who lived there?  What happened to them?  Job loss?  Illness?  Or did they just give up?  Our realtor told us that there are 13,000 homes on the market in our area – twice as many as usual.  And a large chunk of those homes are like this one, foreclosures and short sales.

It would be easy to pass judgment on the former owners of that mortgage.  Many people are in bad situations due to poor decisions, living beyond their means, or just plain greed.  I would submit to you, though, that just as many are receivers of unfortunate circumstance.

I don’t know about you, but when things get difficult, my vision gets blurry from near-sightedness.  All I can see are the circumstances right in front of my face.  I get caught up in “what ifs” and “maybes” and (my favorite) “what does this mean?!”  Instead, I need to keep my eyes fixed on Him.

Last night, while I was sleeping, God caused the moon to glow and still managed to have daylight for the folks on the other side of the globe.  Babies were born.  People died.  The tide went out.  All of this happened without any effort on my part.  Perhaps – and this is just my guess – I don’t run the universe.

If you ever doubt who’s in charge, try to make it rain once, all by yourself.  Or cause the sun to rise at precisely 6:31 a.m.  Or tell the blueberries and tomatoes they should be in season already.  He is the Lord of everything, and that includes your present circumstances and mine.

Let God be God.

He will make everything right.

Even if we don’t have eyes to see…

Who da boss?
